Create Work Life Balance

My son climbed on the teeter-totter at the playground the other day and begged me to join him. Now, I'm no physicist, but I did make several convincing yet unproductive arguments as to why it wouldn't work. Finally I got on the apparatus and demonstrated our dilemma. A teeter-totter requires balance, and my adult body outweighed his.

Take A Holiday - One of the best ways to have a work life balance is just to take a holiday. It doesn't have to be extravagant - you can take a few days off to go for a drive, have a weekend away somewhere, or you could take a few weeks off to go international. The aim is to get away from work and give yourself a physical and mental break. It's a great way of giving yourself more balance in your life.



6) Be mindful. Be present. Don't multi-task. Being present rather than distracted makes you centred and grounded and also creates an impression of gravitas and presence. Multitasking with young children is particularly dangerous. A client told me recently that her young daughter threw something heavy at her in sheer rage when she was distracted from their play date by a business call.

Consider a newly promoted manager. They are eager to learn and eager to make an impact. They have a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm and often come in early or stay late. Do they have a good work-life balance? Or, how about the CEO who is basically on call 24/7, and has heavy travel and meeting schedule as well. Do they have a good work-life balance? The answer will depend on the individual. I know people in these situations who say they enjoy themselves the way it is and others who obviously would rather change it. What's the difference then? How we choose to spend the time we have.

The loss of your presence will be felt among your family and friends when you start putting in too many hours at work. You could miss important events or family milestones. This will leave you feeling left out and could harm the relationships you have outside of work.



Technology does not make get more info it easier: e-mails, (mobile) phones, beepers, pagers, sms, video-messaging or -conferencing, voicemails, websites, magazines, newspapers.........Information overload.

Think of a work-life balance not as a single goal to be achieved as rather an on-going process that needs to be revisited from time to time. Personal and professional needs and desires are constantly shifting; what may have worked for you before might not be the right balance for now or the future.

Don't blame the company for your late night work as it's solely lack of planning and time management on your part. This does not imply that professional people are averse to working long hours. But, the term work-life balance should be highlighted in the dictionary of life. Some of the most successful people in the world including actors, white-collar professionals, politicians and others are those who balance their work and life perfectly.
